There’s no ‘right way’ for your child to combat their swimming lesson butterflies, but over the years, we’ve come up with a few quick tips that will hopefully help them feel more confident and ready for their first splash.
1. Visit the pool beforehand
So there’s no surprises when you get there, why not head to the pool with a parent or guardian before your lesson? That way, you’ll know exactly where to go so your first lesson is as seamless as possible.
2. Be Comfortable
Whether you’re rocking a Spiderman costume or Paw Patrol trunks, make sure you try your swimwear on before your lesson to check that it’s comfortable.
We also recommend that if you’re wearing trunks, make sure they’re above your knee and fairly fitted so they don’t restrict movement in the water.
3. Feel prepared
Your swimming lesson is like anything else – you always feel better when you know you have everything you need. Pack your bag the night before so you’re not running around last minute. At SwimStars, we suggest:
– Swimming costume/fitted trunks
– Towel
– Goggles (only if you need them)
– Bottle of water
– A quick snack for after your lesson – a cereal bar will do!
4. Speak to your teacher
It may seem an obvious one but by telling the teacher you’re a little nervous, they will know to take a bit more time with you as you get comfortable in the water.
Our SwimStars teachers have taught thousands of children and we can promise you; you won’t be the first to feel this way!
5. Don’t feel rushed
So, you’ve already visited the pool, tried on your swimwear, packed your bag at home, spoke to your teacher before the lesson, and now you’re ready to learn.
The key thing to remember is that there’s no rush. Go at your own pace and don’t worry about what any of the other swimmers are doing. Your teacher will make sure you’re safe so all you need to concentrate on is enjoying your lesson!
